the other paul smith

In order for me to discover the meaning of my work I have to be physically connected to it. I often use both hands to apply the paint and to work with it on the canvas. Out of continual reworking I find that the meaning and the colour come together. To me a visceral response to the material is essential. My technique with its emphasis on leaving visible traces in the surface has been described as "Marksism"

bold black and white

I like the black and white versions of these paintings they are bold and really show the technique of the painter

Process

You can really tell your work is a process - the colours and shapes that are formed, seemingly in a random way, come together to create a harmonious composition and also brings something completely new to the canvas - essentially the meaning of the image, which is amazing for the viewer to be able to see

Emotive

the colour schemes in these paintings are really great and I love the marks left on the canvas making the painting very emotive
